The Djellaba is a loose-fitting hooded tunic with long sleeves worn every day in the Maghreb region of North Africa. Traditionally, they were worn ankle-length and over shirts with or without trousers (for men) and over a caftan for women. Today, slimmer and shorter shapes have become popular. Djellabas can be worn as shirtdresses (like a caftan) or as outerwear.
Folkwear's Djellaba is based on the traditional design, with a few modern alterations. We offer two lengths, the traditional ankle length (Views A and B) and the more modern upper calf length (Views C and D). Each length can be made to be a pullover and worn like a shirtdress or cover-up (Views B and D) or be made with a center front zipper and worn more like outerwear or a robe (Views A and C). Either way, this practical and fun garment from North Africa will be useful in your wardrobe!
Trim your Djellaba with Moroccan sfifas or add embroidery, ribbon, or other trim to the neck, front, hood, or sleeves to make a truly unique and beautiful garment.
