Drawn bonnets are bonnets that use cane, reeds or sometimes cord threaded into channels sewn into fabric for support. These bonnets can be made from a solid color silk fabric, like taffeta, and would be worn by upper class women for a fancy event. For a more everyday bonnet, a cotton or polished cotton would be proper. Cotton bonnets could be a solid color with small floral prints, or very-very small check (black or dark brown and white). The fabric for a drawn bonnet can be cut on the straight of grain or on the bias. It is suggested that you cut on the bias, because it does give you a little more latitude when stitching the channels for your cane.
Some parts of the bonnet have to be hand sewn, but you can sew the channels on the sewing machine or by hand.
This pattern comes in three sizes. You can choose the one that works best with your face and how you wear your hair, not necessarily your head size. Because bonnets at this time period were showing more and more of the face in profile, a smaller size might be a better choice for a later time period.
