Worn by herdsmen in Hungary as far back as the Middle Ages, the Szur is a dramatic, mid-calf length coat worn over the shoulders as a cape. It fastens just below the neckline with a decorated buckle.
The Szur is traditionally made of wool felt with the sleeves sewn together at the wrist and used as pockets. The large lapels and broad collar may be lavishly decorated with embroidery or applique.
Folkwear's pattern includes instructions for both the traditional Szur (View A), with optional directions for cutwork applique, and for a simpler, more contemporary version (View B) that includes pockets, a lined lapel and collar back, and finished hems on the sleeves and bottom. View B eliminates the decoration, elaborate buckle closure and back vent.
